A site specific installation for the exhibition "The Way Things Go" at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taipei (Taiwan).
Excerpt from the exhibition catalogue:
"... His current work employs Taiwan's blue-and-white PE canvas as its medium. These canvas are the collective memory of the Taiwanese people, commonly seen at worksites covering materials or protecting cargo trucks or marketplace kiosks from the wind and rain. Völker stitches this temporary, cheap material together into cubes, which he inflates and deflates. The swelling and shrinking of the tarp cubes gives concrete expression to invisible air, and invites intuitive associations with the breathing of living beings. ln the process of enlarging and contracting, the sounds of the surface of the material crinkling and straightening back out can also be heard, manifesting its physical qualities of temporary and oft-ignored material. ..."
